Missions: Lafia Medical Clinic and Laboratories, Nigeria
In June 2004, Bishop Joseph A. McCargo was accompanied on a mission trip to Nigeria by Bishop Larry D. Trotter (Chicago, IL) and Bishop Ralph L. Dennis (Towson, MD). Our travel to a local clinic in Nigeria found a facility with fewer supplies than found typically in our own medicine cabinets. This 4-room facility is operated by a husband and wife team: the husband is a doctor and the wife serves as head nurse. This clinic provides medical assistance to roughly 300,000 local people. Upon our arrival we were told of a young girl in recovery from surgery to remove her appendix. We learned that the doctor performed the surgery without the benefit general anesthesia for the patient -- the patient was given morphine injections and was awake during the entire surgery!
The doctor in this facility is resigned to perform medical care and surgery in a sparsely furnished building with no electrical power and is in desperate need of a generator. We saw a labor and delivery room that consisted of just one bed adorned with a single pillow (see photo on right). Even before touching ground back in the U.S., a phone call was made to request donations of supplies to this clinic. In just a week's time, contributions from the membership of the City of Hope donated thousands of supplies...
- Alcohol pads, cotton swabs, tongue depressors
- Bandaids, bandages, gauze, sponges, and sanitary napkins
- IV sets, catheter kits, oxygen masks, feed bags
- Syringes, needles, probe covers
- Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Pepto-Bismol, cold relief, vitamins
- Filtration masks, latex gloves, mouth barriers
- First aid cream, peroxide, alcohol
- Infamil
Bishop Joseph A. McCargo and the City of Hope have adopted Lafia Clinic and Laboratories and continue to contribute. We currently have over 200 boxes of medical supplies and equipment ready for shipment. We need to ship the supplies by large container, ship transport, or by air. You can help us today! Your monetary donations are needed immediately to assist in the shipping costs.

Thank you so very much for your contributions as we upgrade this hospital. Please call our office at 301.459.3970 to make donations! If you are a medical doctor and/or nurse and would like to go with me on my next trip to this region, please call!
